History
The interdisciplinary program in environmental science was established in 1984 as the result of an integrated cooperation among departments within the Chulalongkorn University under the responsibility of the graduate school. The curriculum focuses on producing personnel at the master’s and doctoral degree levels, with knowledge and capability in environmental science, who are able to lead and perform their missions effectively both nationally and internationally. Course structure has been updated in 2003, 2015, and most recently in 2018 for Thailand to be on par with other developed countries in the field of environmental industry by adhering to sustainable development. Such goals must create and develop personnel with a high potential to build knowledge in ecological chemical and biological monitoring and analysis that can monitor pollution impact from industrial factories. The fundamental elements are applied to prevent, control, and eliminate pollution, as well as to design innovation to monitor and control the environment. However, there is currently a shortage of personnel with knowledge and competence in this field. The course aims to produce graduates who are competent in the field of environmental science, particularly in teaching and research, which is the integration of science (ecology, chemistry, biology, geology), management, and law. The curriculum received cooperation from various faculties and institutes, including the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Engineering, and Environmental Institutes. This resulted in the management and development of content and teaching and learning processes, in accordance with the situation of the economic, social, and cultural development of the country. The curriculum has been conducted in accordance with the mission of the Chulalongkorn University to promote and support graduate studies for academic excellence and sustainable research based on the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy and the determination to continue to achieve the goal of being a part of the pillar of the land.
